The School of Film & Photography at Montana State University-Bozeman invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible Assistant Professor of Film Studies and/or History of Film beginning August 2024.
We aim to find a colleague whose creative work transcends traditional boundaries between film and related media with the ability to teach subjects across the School’s undergraduate and graduate filmmaking curriculum.

Duties and Responsibilities Develop and maintain a significant creative/research agenda Demonstrate teaching effectiveness Participate in curriculum development and assessment Advise undergraduate students and serve on MFA graduate committees Contribute to recruitment, retention, and outreach activities Participate in School, College, and University committees Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills PhD in Film Studies, Film History, or related Media Studies field Active research agenda with demonstrated accomplishment in the field Experience teaching at the university level Ability to teach core undergraduate film history survey courses Ability to teach upper-division undergraduate film studies and related media studies topics of interest Ability to teach in a diverse university community and support the success of students from diverse backgrounds with diverse interests Demonstrated commitment to respecting and teaching diversity in film history and highlighting diverse filmmaking voices, movements, and styles Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Owing to the breadth and integration of our programs, candidates who demonstrate Experience, Education, Knowledge & additional interest, and expertise in one or more of the following areas will be given preference: Ability to teach production courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels Ability to teach documentary studies courses at the graduate level Ability to teach undergraduate photo history The Successful Candidate Will Be able to work closely with other faculty in a collegiate environment and contribute to the school’s academic mission.

The Department The School of Film and Photography (SFP) is part of the College of Arts and Architecture, including the School of Architecture, School of Art, and the School of Music.
SFP represents faculty and students engaged in creating and analyzing film, video, photography, and theatre.
The School serves 219 film & video production majors with a unique curriculum that combines film and video production with theatre and critical studies; 84 photography majors with a curriculum that includes traditional, digital, and alternative processes; 43 B.

students in our Integrated Lens-Based Media major representing a fusion of our film and photography curriculums, and 35 M.

candidates in a documentary film and video production program that emphasizes science and natural history filmmaking.
Faculty research interests span various creative disciplines: narrative, documentary, and experimental film production; digital, analog, and alternative process photography; film studies and critical theory; and theater production.
The College The College of Arts and Architecture is home to distinctive academic programs housed in the Schools of Art, Architecture, Music, and Film & Photography.
Students enjoy close mentoring relationships with faculty through a curriculum that is rich in-studio and lab-based pedagogy.
The College offers international and cultural travel opportunities for students in all majors and encourages internship experiences for many of its programs.
